OpenAI changed how Codex handles rate limits. Instead of resets firing on a fixed timer, eligible users can now save them and trigger a refresh whenever they hit a wall. The change is rolling out across the ChatGPT Go, Plus, Pro, and Business tiers, OpenAI said in a help center post. Every eligible user gets one free banked reset to start.

There's also a referral pilot, and the details here are tighter than the original framing suggests. It runs June 11 through June 24. Plus and Pro subscribers can invite up to three people, and once an invitee sends their first Codex message, both sides bank an extra reset. Business and Enterprise users sit outside the referral program entirely, per OpenAI's referral terms, despite some early reports lumping Business in.

Banked resets expire 30 days after they land. So a Plus or Pro user can stack four total, one free plus three referrals, if everyone invited actually starts using Codex before the window closes.

OpenAI hasn't said whether the banking system continues past the promotion, or what a single reset is worth in practice. No paid reset tiers exist yet, though the infrastructure makes that an easy next step. For now the only paid path past your limit is buying credits, which still applies the moment your bank runs dry.

Bottom Line

Plus and Pro users can bank up to four Codex rate limit resets, each valid for 30 days, with the referral window closing June 24.
