Google just upgraded NotebookLM's video capabilities from narrated slideshows to full cinematic productions. The new feature, Cinematic Video Overviews, launched today for Google AI Ultra subscribers and combines three of Google's AI models to generate animated video explainers from uploaded documents, per Google's blog post.
The system stacks Gemini 3, Nano Banana Pro (Google's image generation model), and Veo 3 (its video generation model) into a single pipeline. Gemini handles the creative direction, choosing narrative structure, visual style, and format, then reportedly refines its own output for consistency. Google says it makes "hundreds of structural and stylistic decisions" per video, though the company hasn't shared specifics on generation time or output length.
NotebookLM's video journey has been a slow build. The tool first shipped Video Overviews in July 2025 as basic narrated slides. An October 2025 update added six visual styles (Watercolor, Anime, Whiteboard, and others) powered by Nano Banana. Cinematic Video Overviews is the third iteration, pushing past static slides into fluid animation.
The catch: English only, 18+ users, and you need a Google AI Ultra subscription. No word on pricing changes or when broader language support arrives. Available on web and mobile starting today.
