Google introduced per-project spending limits for the Gemini API on March 16, letting developers cap monthly costs directly inside AI Studio. The feature, announced on the company's Keyword blog, arrives seven months after a billing bug in August 2025 left some developers facing erroneous charges exceeding $70,000 for services they never used.

The spend caps work at the project level: set a dollar limit, and it holds until you change it. There's a catch, though. Google notes a roughly 10-minute enforcement delay, and developers are responsible for any overages during that window. For high-throughput apps burning thousands of calls per minute, that gap could still hurt.

Google also overhauled its Usage Tiers system. Tier upgrades are now automatic as cumulative spend and account age grow, with lower qualification thresholds than before. Each tier now carries a billing-account-level cap on monthly spend, enforced across all projects. Those caps kick in on April 1, 2026, per the billing docs.

Rounding out the update: billing setup now lives inside AI Studio instead of requiring a detour to the Cloud Console, and new dashboards surface rate limits (RPM, TPM, RPD), daily cost breakdowns by project and model, plus token and error stats. Practical stuff, if overdue.

The timing is hard to separate from that August 2025 incident, where a pricing configuration error charged developers for image generation tokens they never requested. Competitors like OpenAI have offered hard spending limits for much longer. Google is closing that gap, but the 10-minute delay on cap enforcement means it's not quite a hard ceiling yet.

Bottom Line

Google's new per-project spend caps take effect immediately, but the 10-minute enforcement delay means developers with high-throughput apps still face overage risk.
