Apple is undergoing its most concentrated executive turnover since Steve Jobs died in 2011, with seven senior leaders departing or announcing exits within months of each other. The departures span AI, design, legal, environmental policy, and operations, affecting executives who reported directly to CEO Tim Cook.
Who's Leaving
The confirmed exits include AI chief John Giannandrea, who will remain until spring 2026 after Apple phased him out of his role starting in March. Design lead Alan Dye left for Meta's Reality Labs unit. General Counsel Kate Adams and Environmental Policy VP Lisa Jackson both announced retirements for 2026. COO Jeff Williams stepped down in July, with Sabih Khan assuming his duties. CFO Luca Maestri stepped back earlier this year.
The biggest uncertainty surrounds Johny Srouji, Apple's senior vice president of hardware technologies. According to Bloomberg, Srouji recently told Cook he is "seriously considering leaving in the near future" and would join another company if he departs. Srouji led the Mac transition to Apple Silicon and oversaw development of the C1 cellular modem and N1 wireless chip that debuted in this year's iPhone lineup.
Apple's Retention Efforts
Cook has been working to keep Srouji, offering substantial pay packages and expanded responsibilities. One option under discussion would promote Srouji to chief technology officer, making him Apple's second-most-powerful executive behind Cook. But there's a catch: sources say Srouji would prefer not to work under a different CEO, which could complicate succession planning.
If Srouji leaves, Zongjian Chen or Sribalan Santhanam would likely replace him. As Tom's Hardware notes, Srouji uniquely spans CPU/GPU microarchitecture, NPU accelerator design, 5G modem development, packaging strategy, and TSMC foundry negotiations. No other executive currently covers that range.
The Replacement Roster
Apple has moved quickly to fill gaps. Jennifer Newstead, currently Meta's chief legal officer, will replace Adams as general counsel starting March 1, 2026. Her title will be senior vice president of general counsel and government affairs, consolidating Adams's and Jackson's responsibilities into one role.
Amar Subramanya, a former Google and Microsoft executive who worked on Gemini assistant development, joins as vice president of AI to replace Giannandrea. Stephen Lemay takes over from Dye as design lead. Apple blogger John Gruber, citing sources within the company, wrote that employees are "borderline giddy" about Lemay, who has worked on every major Apple interface since 1999, including the original iPhone.
The Succession Question
Tim Cook turned 65 recently. While he's not expected to leave immediately, Bloomberg reports that succession planning has been underway for years. Hardware engineering chief John Ternus, 50, is viewed internally as the leading candidate for CEO.
The concentrated departures could serve multiple purposes: positioning specialized leaders under whoever succeeds Cook, and bringing in fresh expertise as Apple plays catch-up in generative AI. The company delayed its AI-powered Siri update, which will now run Google's models.
Apple's AI organization has faced broader disruption beyond leadership. AI models chief Ruoming Pang left for Meta earlier this year, along with colleagues Tom Gunter and Frank Chu. AI robotics software lead Jian Zhang also departed for Meta.
Apple shares closed Friday at levels consistent with the company's $4 trillion valuation. Newstead officially joins in January 2026; Adams and Jackson depart later that year.
