Unity rolled out Unity AI in open beta last week, putting an in-editor agentic assistant, an AI Gateway for third-party models, and an official MCP server in front of every developer running Unity 6 or newer. The announcement post went up May 1.

The built-in agent is trained on what Unity describes as 20 years of engine documentation and best practices, and it operates in three modes: Ask, Agent, and Plan. It can read scene context, inspect GameObjects, generate C# scripts, and roll back its own changes via checkpoints. There's also a Figma-to-UI flow that turns a design link into UI Toolkit or uGUI code in a single conversation.

The AI Gateway lets developers bring their own API keys for outside models, which Unity says won't burn its internal credits. The MCP server exposes editor control to external IDEs and LLM applications.

Pricing is the friction point. Pro, Enterprise, and Industry subscribers get the agent included with their seats. Personal users get a 14-day trial with 1,000 one-time credits, then it's $10 a month for 1,000 credits. And here's the catch developers flagged in the announcement thread: even bringing your own Claude or OpenAI key still requires a paid Unity AI subscription on Personal. "This might be the first time seeing a company gatekeeping their MCP behind a paywall," one commenter wrote, noting many developers already pay for Codex or Claude Code.

Unity AI is not backwards compatible. It strictly requires Unity 6.0 or newer.

Bottom Line

Personal-tier developers must pay $10 a month after a 14-day, 1,000-credit trial, even when supplying their own model keys.
