OpenAI rolled out GPT-5.3 Instant on Tuesday, replacing the default conversational model in ChatGPT across web, mobile, and desktop. The update targets something benchmarks don't measure: the way ChatGPT talks to you.
The previous model, GPT-5.2 Instant, had become a running joke. Users complained it opened responses with unsolicited emotional support, phrases like "Stop. Take a breath," or lengthy safety disclaimers before answering straightforward questions. Some canceled subscriptions over it. OpenAI's own framing is blunt: the old model's tone "could sometimes feel cringe." GPT-5.3 Instant strips back those preambles and reduces unnecessary refusals, so the bot actually answers the question first.
On the accuracy front, OpenAI claims hallucination rates dropped 26.8% when using web search and 19.7% on internal knowledge alone, per its system card. Those are company-reported numbers from internal evals, not independent testing. The model also handles web results better, synthesizing information rather than dumping link lists.
There are trade-offs. The system card flags that GPT-5.3 Instant actually performs worse than its predecessor on safety evaluations for disallowed sexual content and self-harm. OpenAI acknowledged the regressions but noted results could shift post-launch. No timeline on adult content support either, which the company says it's still figuring out.
Developers can access the model via API as gpt-5.3-chat-latest. GPT-5.2 Instant stays in the legacy picker for paid users until June 3. OpenAI teased GPT-5.4 is coming "sooner than you think," which drew more eye-rolls than excitement on X given recent backlash over the company's Pentagon deal.
Bottom Line
GPT-5.3 Instant is live now as ChatGPT's default model, with GPT-5.2 Instant retiring June 3, 2026.
